Lifting the Bucket is a collection of paintings, performances, and prints engaging with themes of spirituality, sexuality, and emptiness within the context of everyday spaces. The title is taken from a chapter of the same name from Saint Teresa of Avila’s Book of My Life. This phrase is in reference to her writings about prayer. According to her, prayer exists in four stages, with the first involving meditational rigor in order to receive spiritual blessings. In the same way, this body of work involves the time intensive examination of the mundane in order to uncover the sacredness hidden within. I invite the viewer to contemplate these subjects beyond their utilitarian function and—perhaps—see something sacred within them.
