Baptism into death/The Colonel serves to the Twelve Tribes
Run time: 50 minutes The installation is a re-staging of Biblical narratives of the baptism of Christ, the Last Supper, the flagellation, and the Messianic Banquet. The work re-envisions these stories through playing on stereotypes of masculinity in blue collar American male circles while considering the potential for a queer Christ. Outside scenes are utilized to show the transcendence of God’s (queer) glory and love, while interior scenes present the strife within the queer's time on earth. The vast field alludes to the ever-distant promised land, a queer future. The Messianic Banquet is seen in both Christian and Jewish traditions as the time when the twelve tribes of Israel will be restored, and the land of milk and honey is ushered in. This event holds potential hope in these traditions for renewal, peace, and acceptance where all the righteous will sit at the table together. In a similar way, queers look towards the distant to come, to be free. |
